The gist. This is a massive, state-run public language school in the Ciutat Vella neighborhood with over 100 teachers.
What sets it apart. Since it is a public school, you get official government certificates when you pass. They have a huge student community with its own choir and theater group. Instead of using standard textbooks, teachers often make their own worksheets to help you learn.
Best for. Budget-conscious students who want official certificates and a lively, social school.
I started with zero Spanish but I could actually speak after just a term and a half because the teachers are so supportive. The intensive summer course is fast but the teachers break up the hard work with fun games and helpful photocopies. The lessons are great but the classrooms can get very warm and the elevator gets crowded in the morning.
7. Olé Barcelona Spanish Language School
The gist. This certified school has been teaching Spanish in the center of Barcelona since 2005.
What sets it apart. They keep classes very small with a limit of nine students. They also make everyone speak only Spanish in class to help you learn faster. They do not work with travel agencies, which helps them keep prices low and stay friendly.
Best for. People who want small classes, evening lessons, or a cozy place to study.
The lessons are incredibly fun and motivating, and the small group size helped me build my confidence quickly. My teachers were amazing and kept me smiling, which made it easy to learn even as a complete beginner. The classes are great, but the payment system is hard to change. You have to book in four-week blocks, and they could not promise me a morning schedule.
8. Academia Guiu
The gist. This historic school opened in 1892. They help international students pass university entrance exams and learn Spanish.
What sets it apart. They are experts at helping students get into Spanish universities, and they assist with visas, housing, and school paperwork. They even offer online tutoring 24 hours a day.
Best for. Students from other countries who want to go to college in Spain and need help with visa paperwork.
I felt truly welcomed here as an international student, and the staff gave me amazing support with all my university admission paperwork. The teachers are highly professional and always ready to help you even outside of normal class hours. It can be hard to get an email reply. Also, getting a refund after a visa denial is a very slow and frustrating process.
9. Linguaschools Barcelona
The gist. This cozy school started in 2005. It sits inside two historic buildings in the city center, and it even has its own private gardens where you can relax.
What sets it apart. You get two different teachers every day, which helps you get used to different accents and speaking styles. They also offer fun classes that mix Spanish with local culture or dance.
Best for. Students who want a beautiful, green space to study and lots of fun activities.
