1. Dutch courses Utrecht
The gist. This school has taught Dutch to expats, professionals, and refugees in Utrecht since 2000.
What sets it apart. They write their own study guides instead of using standard textbooks. They also have special classes for medical workers who need BIG-register licenses, which is the official Dutch system for medical workers.
Best for. Professionals and students who want fast, structured classes to pass official Dutch exams.
Preparing the lessons at home before class really helps the information stick, and we focus on actual speaking rather than just grammar. The teachers are incredibly kind and patient, and they explain things in many different ways until you fully understand. The grading system is very strict. You might have to repeat a whole level because of one bad test.
2. Babel Language Courses
The gist. Babel started in 1983, taking over from the university's James Boswell Institute to teach Dutch to new learners.
What sets it apart. They partner with the Utrecht Summer School. You can take medical Dutch classes here, and you can study on campus or use their online tools to get ready for exams.
Best for. Students and workers who need Dutch for university or their jobs.
The teachers have a lot of experience. They use real-life examples to teach you about Dutch language and culture. It is a good choice if you want to learn basic Dutch quickly in nice classrooms. The teachers speak almost only Dutch in class. This makes it very hard if you are a complete beginner.
3. Instituto Cervantes
The gist. This is an official Spanish government school in the center of Utrecht. Since 1991, they have taught Spanish, regional languages, and Dutch for Spanish speakers.
What sets it apart. It is the only Cervantes center in the Netherlands. You will study in a beautiful historic building, use their special library, and attend cultural events.
Best for. Spanish speakers who want to learn Dutch, or anyone who wants to learn Spanish.
The teachers are great, the building is beautiful, and they host fun cultural events. My short course was great because the group was small and the teacher helped us practice speaking. The library is only open for a few hours a day, and some exam rooms get very hot.
4. Taalcentrum Kookoovaja
The gist. This small school has taught Dutch, English, Italian, and Greek since 2014.
What sets it apart. They mix language lessons with fun weekend activities. You can join their Sunday events to cook, visit museums, or watch movies while you practice speaking.
Best for. People who want a friendly, social space and like learning through games and activities.
The classes are small and cozy. We play games to help us practice speaking. My teacher has so much energy that lessons are always fun and never feel like hard work. The school is getting better at sending updates, but their in-person classes are much better than the online lessons.
5. NIOW B.V.
The gist. This training company has over fifty years of experience. They teach business Dutch and other languages.
What sets it apart. They use a method they call "Head, Heart, and Hands" along with their own online portal. This mix of live classes and online tools helps you learn how to write and speak at work.
Best for. Workers and healthcare staff who need to use Dutch at their jobs.
The classes are active and no one judges you, which makes it much easier to learn. My teacher explained the grammar rules clearly and gave me extra homework to practice. The teacher explained the tiny details of the language that you cannot find in simple apps.
6. NLtraining
The gist. This is a large school that helps people learn Dutch for daily life, work, and integration exams.
What sets it apart. They offer in-person and online classes. You can also take computer and math classes here, or practice speaking with others at their school cafe.
Best for. People who need to pass integration exams or learn everyday Dutch.
My teacher was very patient and creative, which helped us get ready for our exams. The lessons are interesting and the school sends clear updates. The classes can feel too general because students have different skill levels, so you do not get much individual help.
7. Heart of Language
The gist. This school offers private Dutch lessons that use deep relaxation and hypnosis to help you learn.
What sets it apart. You study while deeply relaxed so you do not feel scared to speak. They record your lessons so you can listen later, and you can study up to forty hours a week.
Best for. People who feel nervous about speaking and want private lessons to build confidence.
The relaxation method helped me stop worrying about speaking. It made the lessons feel very personal. The lessons were made just for me, and the recordings made it easy to practice at home. This is an easy way to learn because you can practice without feeling judged.
8. NCB Opleidingen BV
The gist. This school focuses on Dutch classes and integration for expats and migrants.
What sets it apart. They have their own publishing department that writes their textbooks. They also combine language classes with job training to help you find work in the Netherlands.
Best for. People who want to pass their integration exams and find a job.
I highly recommend this school because the teachers are very good at helping you learn. The whole team is great and the teachers pay close attention to what you need.
9. Dutch First
The gist. Dutch First started in 2014, and they teach practical Dutch to expats, workers, and international students.
What sets it apart. They have students from over ninety different countries. They use a popular textbook series to help you get ready for integration exams.
Best for. Expats who want fast, focused prep for integration exams.
The staff are very friendly. The classrooms are clean and quiet, and they even give you free coffee and cookies. I took the fast course and made great progress in one month. Now I feel confident speaking Dutch every day. The classes move very fast. The online lessons can be hard for beginners because the teachers speak mostly Dutch.
10. Sagènn Educatie Utrecht
The gist. This is a large school that offers structured Dutch classes to help you build a life in the Netherlands.
What sets it apart. They combine language lessons with career coaching. They also help you apply for DUO study loans, which are government loans for students. You will use their textbook and online tools to study on a schedule that works for you.
Best for. People who need to pass integration exams and want help finding a career.
The school is professional and well-organized, and the staff are wonderful. The teachers are excellent and really help you learn. I felt the quality was low and the classrooms did not work well for me.
How HearSay works with language schools
A good class teaches you a lot. But it is hard to find time to practice speaking before your next lesson. That is where HearSay helps.
- We match our practice to your school lessons. This means you practice what you just learned in class, not random words.
- You can practice speaking hands-free while you walk, travel, or cook.
