2. Oxford International Toronto English School
The gist. This central school has taught English courses ranging from basic communication to academic university pathways in the Entertainment District since 1991.
What sets it apart. It is an official IELTS test centre that uses National Geographic Learning materials, and it runs an on-site career college offering vocational training in healthcare and childcare.
Best for. Professionals and students who need intensive exam preparation or vocational qualifications. It is a poor fit for casual tourists who just want light, conversational practice.
My vocabulary and fluency improved incredibly quickly during my intensive course, and the teachers shared so much general knowledge beyond just language rules. The lessons cover challenging topics like science and economics, which really built my confidence in reading and writing about complex subjects. Best for. Anyone looking for a highly social, fully packaged study trip with accommodation and group excursions. It will feel overwhelming if you prefer quiet, independent study.
I spent five months here and loved learning about Canadian culture alongside my English lessons, plus the student residence staff were incredibly supportive. The lessons are highly interactive and focus on real conversations, which helped me build my speaking confidence while making friends from all over the world. It is a highly social environment with fantastic weekend trips and city tours that help you practise your skills outside the classroom.
4. Kaplan International Languages
The gist. Situated near the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, this central school focuses on intensive English training and academic university preparation.
What sets it apart. Lessons combine classroom teaching with the school's own books and digital study clubs, backed by a guarantee that you will progress one level every ten weeks. They also run separate classes for professionals aged 30 and over.
Best for. Career-focused adults and university-bound students. It is not designed for those who want a relaxed, low-intensity schedule or private one-to-one tutoring.
The classes are highly engaging and my teacher's daily encouragement helped me build the confidence to speak English every day. Studying here for four months helped me prepare for my IELTS exam while making friends from all over the world through the daily social activities. While the teaching staff are wonderful, the wide gap in language abilities within the same classroom sometimes slowed down our learning pace.
5. ACCESS International English Language Centre
The gist. This small downtown academy focuses on small-group English immersion and enforces a strict English-only policy inside the building.
What sets it apart. Adult classes are limited to ten students to ensure you get personal attention. The school also runs specialised courses like English for Medicine alongside standard exam prep, and offers free Friday social activities to practise speaking around Toronto.
Best for. Students who learn best in interactive, small-group settings with strict immersion. It is a poor fit if you prefer large lecture formats or need online evening classes.
The strict English-only rule inside the building really pushed me to speak and helped me build my confidence quickly. The teachers are incredibly patient and supportive, and they always take the time to help you understand the lessons. I loved the welcoming, family-like atmosphere and the weekly social activities that let us explore the city together.
6. St. George International College (SGIC)
The gist. This established downtown academy has taught a variety of specialised English programmes alongside general language classes for many years.
What sets it apart. The school offers highly specific career tracks, including medical English, teacher training, and translation courses that include real-world internships with the RCMP. Students also use a dedicated speaking curriculum with regular one-on-one feedback from teachers.
Best for. Career-focused students who want intensive daily study and professional pathways. It is not suitable for casual tourists who want a light, flexible schedule.

Best for. Active students who want to combine language study with a busy social calendar and job-hunting support. It is not suited to those who want a quiet, purely academic environment.
I made friends from all over the world and built real confidence in my speaking skills, while the weekly quizzes and monthly oral tests kept me on track. The teachers are incredibly supportive and even helped me polish my resume and gave me advice for my local job search.
8. CLLC Toronto
The gist. This midtown Toronto branch of a multi-campus Canadian institution, founded in 2004, teaches general English, business English, and academic pathway programmes.
What sets it apart. The school is known for its unique Public School Parents' Programme, which supports immigrant parents, alongside its "4U Philosophy" focused on flexibility and care.
Best for. Immigrant parents and university-bound students who need targeted support. If you want a massive downtown campus, you might find this midtown branch too small.
My classes are incredibly engaging and helped me rebuild my confidence while making friends from all over the world. It is a smaller campus, which makes it much easier to connect with the teachers and get personal support. I loved the social trips to local museums and cafes, which gave us a chance to practise speaking in real situations.
9. English Path Toronto
The gist. The global GEDU education group launched this Financial District school in 2021 to teach English alongside French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin.
What sets it apart. Located in a historic landmark building with direct access to the 30km PATH underground network, the school offers professional certificates in digital marketing and business management alongside standard language training.
Best for. Professionals who want to combine language study with business or marketing certificates. It is not suited to those looking for a small, local boutique academy.
The supportive teachers and structured curriculum really helped me build my confidence when speaking English. I loved the central location and the chance to meet students from all over the world in such a friendly environment. The staff are incredibly helpful and organise great activities to help you settle into life in the city.
10. ILAC
The gist. This large, well-known institution has run major campuses in Toronto and Vancouver for over 30 years, delivering intensive English programmes.
What sets it apart. The school has a massive university pathway network that connects students directly to over 300 partner institutions across Canada, the USA, and Europe. It is also an official testing centre for major exams like IELTS and CELPIP, combining preparation with on-site testing.
Best for. Academic-track students aiming for North American higher education who can benefit from the extensive university partnerships. It is a poor fit if you want small, highly personalised classes or flexible daytime schedules.
My English progressed from basic to being able to write and speak confidently, and the social activities made it easy to build a global network of friends.
