Master foundational Dutch communication by listening to Sam and Emma's conversation, inspired by Chapters 1 through 5 of Nederlands In Gang. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

Lessons

Greeting and introductions
Sam and Emma meet for the first time at the start of a Dutch class and exchange names and greetings.
Spelling and personal details
Emma asks Sam where he is from. He gives his first name and spells out his surname letter by letter.
Numbers and contact info
Sam asks Emma for her phone number, then takes down her street address and postcode.
Language and formalities
Sam opens the conversation with the formal 'u', and Emma invites him to switch to the informal 'jij'.
Describing your family
Sam shows Emma a family photo and describes what his parents and his sister look like.
Asking open questions
Emma asks Sam a series of open questions about his sister and his family, and he asks what her partner looks like.
Telling the time
Sam asks Emma what time it is, and they work out how long it is until the break starts.
Ordering at the cafe
Sam and Emma order a coffee and a beer at a café, and Emma insists on paying.
Birthdays and months
Sam notices the date, and Emma mentions that her birthday falls the very next day.
Making an appointment
Sam has an appointment to get to, so they check Emma's diary and arrange coffee for the next day.
Accepting or deciding plans
Emma suggests going to the cinema. Thursday does not work for Sam, so they settle on Friday.
Buying fresh vegetables
Sam and Emma find a greengrocer at the market and buy a kilo of potatoes and some tomatoes.
Fruit and pricing
Emma asks what the fruit costs and, once she knows the prices, decides how much to buy.
Cooking a Dutch dish
Sam and Emma cook stamppot together and work out the order in which the ingredients go in.
