# First steps: Numbers, prices and paying

> Join Kinoshita and Yamaguchi for a Saturday morning of prices and change, one short conversation at a time. Each lesson trains your ear until you can follow every word and answer back.

**Setting:** A greengrocer's stall in the Yanaka shopping street in Tokyo on a Saturday morning, busy but not rushed. Kinoshita comes most weeks and Yamaguchi knows her face. Both hold polite です・ます form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Asking what something costs

Kinoshita asks Yamaguchi what the apples cost.

### 2. Asking a price again

Kinoshita misses the price of the tomatoes and asks Yamaguchi again.

### 3. Asking the price of more items

Kinoshita asks Yamaguchi the price of the carrots too.

### 4. Saying how many you want

Yamaguchi works through the stall item by item and Kinoshita says how many she wants.

### 5. Asking for the total

Kinoshita asks Yamaguchi what it comes to all together.

### 6. Paying with a note

Kinoshita hands Yamaguchi a thousand-yen note.

### 7. Understanding your change

Yamaguchi counts out Kinoshita's change and sends her off.
