# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Ishikawa and Miura's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small café counter in Tokyo, quiet in the middle of a weekday morning. Ishikawa comes in most days and orders at the counter, where Miura works on his own. Both hold polite です・ます form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Miura asks Ishikawa what she would like, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing a size

Ishikawa asks for a small, then changes her mind and tells Miura she wants a large.

### 3. Choosing between hot and iced

Miura asks Ishikawa whether the coffee should be hot or iced.

### 4. Asking for milk without sugar

Ishikawa tells Miura she wants milk but no sugar.

### 5. Adding to your order

Ishikawa adds a tea, and Miura checks whether she wants it hot or cold.

### 6. Drinking in or taking away

Miura asks Ishikawa whether she is staying, and she takes a table.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Miura brings the drinks over and warns Ishikawa that the coffee is hot.
