# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Priya and Josh's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small coffee shop on a corner in London, quiet in the middle of the morning, with two or three people waiting. Priya comes in most days and orders at the counter, where Josh works on his own.

## Lessons

### 1. Taking your turn in the queue

Josh calls the next person and Priya works out that he means her.

### 2. Choosing a size

Priya asks for a small, then changes her mind and tells Josh she wants a large.

### 3. Choosing which milk you want

Josh asks Priya which kind of milk she would like.

### 4. Asking for no sugar

Priya tells Josh she wants no sugar, and he reads the order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Priya adds a tea and a small water to her order.

### 6. Eating in or taking away

Priya says she is staying, and gives Josh her name.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Josh brings the drinks over and warns Priya that the coffee is hot.
