# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Zhou Yu and Gao Xiang's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small café on a corner in Beijing, quiet in the middle of the morning. Zhou Yu comes in most days and Gao Xiang is alone behind the counter. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Gao Xiang asks Zhou Yu what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing a size

Zhou Yu asks for a small coffee and then changes her mind.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

Zhou Yu tells Gao Xiang she takes it without sugar.

### 4. Ordering something to eat

Gao Xiang offers Zhou Yu some bread and reads her order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Zhou Yu adds a tea and then closes her order.

### 6. Drinking in or taking away

Zhou Yu says she is staying, and Gao Xiang asks her to wait a moment.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Gao Xiang brings the order over and warns Zhou Yu that the coffee is hot.
