# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to María and Luis's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small corner café in Madrid, quiet in the middle of the morning. María comes in most days and Luis is alone behind the counter. They use usted with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Luis asks María what she would like, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing how your coffee comes

Luis asks María whether she wants it black or with milk.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

María tells Luis she takes it without sugar.

### 4. Adding to your order

María adds a tea and a small water to her order.

### 5. Drinking in or taking away

María says she is staying, and Luis finds her a table.

### 6. Waiting for your order

Luis tells María he will bring it over.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Luis brings the drinks over and warns María that the coffee is hot.
