# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Chiara and Ciro's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small bar in the Vomero in Naples, quiet in the middle of the morning. Chiara comes in most days and Ciro is alone behind the counter. They hold Lei with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Ciro asks Chiara what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing how your coffee comes

Chiara asks for a macchiato, then changes her mind and tells Ciro she wants it plain.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

Chiara tells Ciro she takes it without sugar.

### 4. Ordering something to eat

Ciro offers Chiara a cornetto and reads her order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Chiara adds a tea and then closes her order.

### 6. Choosing counter or table

Chiara says she is staying at the counter, and Ciro tells her to wait a moment.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Ciro sets the order down and warns Chiara that the coffee is scalding.
