# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Sofia and Vasco's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small café in Alfama in Lisbon, quiet in the middle of the morning. Sofia comes in most days and Vasco is alone behind the counter. Both hold the polite form.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Vasco asks Sofia what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Changing your order

Sofia switches to a galão and then goes back to the bica.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

Sofia tells Vasco she takes it without sugar.

### 4. Ordering something to eat

Vasco offers Sofia a pastel de nata and reads her order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Sofia adds a tea and then closes her order.

### 6. Drinking in or taking away

Sofia says she is staying, and Vasco tells her to wait a moment.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Vasco sets the order down and warns Sofia that the coffee is very hot.
