# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Valeria and Diego's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small corner café in the Barranco district of Lima, quiet in the middle of the morning. Valeria comes in most days and Diego is alone behind the counter. They use usted with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Diego asks Valeria what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing how your coffee comes

Diego offers Valeria a choice of milk and size, and she answers both.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

Valeria tells Diego she takes it without sugar and he reads the order back.

### 4. Adding to your order

Valeria adds a tea and a small water to her order.

### 5. Drinking in or taking away

Valeria says she is staying and Diego offers her a table.

### 6. Waiting for your order

Diego asks Valeria to wait a moment and says he will bring it over.

### 7. Getting your drinks at the table

Diego brings the drinks over and warns Valeria that the coffee is hot.
