# First steps: Eating out

> Listen in as Hayakawa and Kobayashi talk through a dinner order in real, everyday Japanese. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A small set-meal restaurant in an old Tokyo neighbourhood in the evening, with a counter and a few tables. Hayakawa has come for dinner with a friend and Kobayashi is running the room on his own. Both hold polite です・ます form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Asking for a table

Hayakawa asks Kobayashi for a table, and he seats her and her friend.

### 2. Asking for the menu

Hayakawa asks Kobayashi for the menu, and he tells her to take her time.

### 3. Ordering for two people

Hayakawa orders one set meal for herself and another for her friend.

### 4. Ordering drinks with a meal

Kobayashi takes Hayakawa's order for a beer and some water.

### 5. Asking for another bowl of rice

Hayakawa tells Kobayashi the food is good and asks for more rice.

### 6. Asking for the bill

Hayakawa asks Kobayashi for the bill, and to split it.

### 7. Saying thank you after a meal

Hayakawa thanks Kobayashi for the meal on her way out.
