# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Maya and Luis's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small coffee shop on a corner in Chicago, quiet in the middle of the morning. Maya comes in most days and orders at the counter, where Luis works on his own.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Luis asks Maya what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Choosing a size

Maya asks for a small, then changes her mind and tells Luis she wants a large.

### 3. Choosing which milk you want

Luis asks Maya which kind of milk she would like.

### 4. Asking for no sugar

Maya tells Luis she wants no sugar, and he reads the order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Maya adds an iced tea and a small water to her order.

### 6. Drinking in or taking away

Maya says she is staying, and gives Luis her name.

### 7. Collecting your drinks

Luis brings the drinks over and warns Maya that the coffee is hot.
