# First steps: Ordering a drink

> Master ordering at a counter by listening to Patrícia and Douglas's conversation about coffee on a quiet morning. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A small café on a corner in Vila Madalena in São Paulo, quiet in the middle of the morning. Patrícia comes in most days and Douglas is alone behind the counter. They use você with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering a drink at a counter

Douglas asks Patrícia what she would like, twice, and she orders a coffee.

### 2. Changing your order

Patrícia asks for a small coffee and then changes her mind.

### 3. Asking for no sugar

Patrícia tells Douglas she takes it without sugar.

### 4. Ordering something to eat

Douglas offers Patrícia a pão de queijo and reads her order back.

### 5. Adding to your order

Patrícia adds a tea and then closes her order.

### 6. Drinking in or taking away

Patrícia says she is staying, and Douglas asks her to wait a moment.

### 7. Getting your order

Douglas brings the order over and warns Patrícia that the coffee is hot.
