# Nuovo Espresso 1, Unit 9: The bakery at dawn

> Join Teresa and Nicola at a bakery in Bari as the sun comes up, one short conversation at a time, pairing with the themes of unit 9 of Nuovo Espresso 1. Each lesson trains your ear until you can follow every word and answer back.

**Setting:** A neighbourhood bakery in Bari at half past six in the morning on 23 December, just as the shutters go up. Teresa stops here on her way home every morning of her night-shift weeks; Nicola, the baker, has been up since three. They use tu with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Ordering the usual

Nicola greets Teresa and gets her usual focaccia and bread, still warm.

### 2. Asking when someone gets up

Teresa asks Nicola what time he gets up, and can't believe the answer.

### 3. Saying your day is the other way round

Nicola asks if Teresa gets up early too, and she tells him she is on her way to bed.

### 4. Saying how often you work nights

Nicola asks Teresa if she always works nights, and whether she likes it.

### 5. Describing your afternoon

Teresa tells Nicola when she wakes up and what she does next, and he tells her about his afternoon.

### 6. Talking about Christmas

Nicola asks if Teresa works at Christmas, and tells her when the bakery is closed.

### 7. Exchanging Christmas wishes

Nicola and Teresa wish each other a happy Christmas, and a good rest and a good day's work.
