# Nederlands in actie 9: Asking a friend for advice

**Setting:** The beach at Egmond aan Zee on a windy Sunday in November. Chiara, a researcher from Bologna, has lived in the Netherlands for three years; Hidde is one of her few close friends here, from the climbing gym. They walk along the water with their hands in their pockets. They use je with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Describing a photo

Chiara shows Hidde a photo of her friends in Bologna, and he asks who is who.

### 2. Talking about friends here and at home

Hidde asks how many close friends Chiara has here, and they compare how people make friends.

### 3. Explaining a dilemma

Chiara tells Hidde that her best friend's wedding and an important conference fall in the same week.

### 4. Saying what you would do

Chiara asks Hidde what he would do, and he chooses the wedding without a second thought.

### 5. Finding a middle way

Chiara thinks of recording her talk in advance, and Hidde tells her what he would do next.

### 6. Asking a friend for advice in return

Hidde tells Chiara he hasn't spoken to his brother for months, and she gives him the same kind of advice.

### 7. Heading back

Rain is coming, so Hidde and Chiara walk back, and he asks to see her wedding photos.
