# Nederlands in actie 6: At a school open day

**Language:** Dutch
**CEFR Level:** B1

> Join Ellen and Rafael at a secondary school open day, one short conversation at a time, pairing with the themes of chapter 6 of Nederlands in actie. Each lesson trains your ear until you can follow every word and answer back.

**Setting:** The hall of a secondary school in Hilversum on a Saturday morning in January, with coffee after the open-day presentation. Ellen and Rafael know each other from the school gate: Tess and Lucas are in the same class, in their last year of primary school. Ellen grew up with the Dutch system; Rafael is still working it out. They use je with each other.

## Lessons

### 1. Saying what you thought of a visit

Rafael and Ellen talk about the presentation, and about the mentor they have just spoken to.

### 2. Explaining the school system

Rafael asks how the school advice works, and Ellen explains how it decides where Lucas can go.

### 3. Asking why something is the way it is

Rafael wonders why children here choose so young, and Ellen admits that many Dutch people are critical of it too.

### 4. Agreeing in part

Ellen defends the Dutch system a little, and Rafael only partly agrees.

### 5. Talking about your own school days

Ellen and Rafael compare their own secondary schools, and the teachers they remember.

### 6. Talking about what your child is good at

Ellen asks what Lucas is good at, and they decide to go and see the school's lab.

### 7. Arranging to meet again

Rafael asks about another school's open day next week, and Ellen suggests they go for coffee afterwards.
