# Menschen A1.2, Unit 20: Cleaning day in the flatshare

**Language:** German
**CEFR Level:** A1

> Master asking people to do things by listening to Paula and Deniz's conversation about cleaning day in their flatshare, which pairs with the themes of unit 20 of Menschen A1.2. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** A three-person flatshare near the university in Mainz at ten on a Saturday morning, which is cleaning day. Paula is up and organised; Deniz worked in a bar until three. They share out the jobs, hunt for the vacuum cleaner, move a heavy cupboard and moan about their flatmate Ole's frying pan, until Ole comes home in the last lesson. They use du with each other from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Waking someone up

Paula wakes Deniz for cleaning day, and he tries to get another hour in bed.

### 2. Sharing out the jobs

Paula gives Deniz the bathroom again, because that's what the rota says, and the hall goes to Ole.

### 3. Asking where something is

Deniz asks where the vacuum cleaner is, and Paula sends him down to the cellar for it.

### 4. Asking for a hand

Paula can't move the cupboard alone, and Deniz comes to help her lift it.

### 5. Complaining about a flatmate

Deniz finds a dirty frying pan, and he and Paula agree it's Ole's, as always.

### 6. Leaving a message

Paula tells Deniz to message Ole, and the two of them add a job each.

### 7. Showing off the result

Ole comes home, and Deniz calls him and Paula to see the clean bathroom.
