# Menschen A1.1, Unit 9: Dinner at a colleague's

> Listen in as Bettina and Kwame share a Friday dinner at her flat in real, everyday German, pairing with the themes of unit 9 of Menschen A1.1. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** Bettina's flat in Würzburg on a Friday evening. Kwame started in her lab a month ago, and she has invited him for dinner: trout with potato salad, then apple cake. He is hungry, she loves feeding people, and she doesn't take no for an answer. They use du with each other from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Welcoming a guest

Bettina opens the door to Kwame, and he brings her flowers.

### 2. Offering a drink

Bettina offers Kwame a drink; he asks for water and then wine, and she tells him it's local.

### 3. Saying you're hungry

Bettina asks Kwame if he's hungry, and he very much is.

### 4. Saying what food you like

Bettina checks that Kwame likes fish, and tells him what's for dinner.

### 5. Taking a second helping

Bettina offers Kwame more potato salad, and he says yes straight away.

### 6. Turning down dessert

Bettina brings out the apple cake, and Kwame tries to say no.

### 7. Complimenting the cook

Kwame tells Bettina the food is wonderful, and this time he really does turn down more cake.
