# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Neha and Rajesh's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The lobby of an apartment building in Lajpat Nagar in Delhi on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Neha moved in at the weekend and runs into Rajesh, who has lived here for years, on her way out. Both speak to each other formally throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Neha and Rajesh say hello in the lobby, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Neha and Rajesh exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Saying pleased to meet you

Rajesh tells Neha he is pleased to meet her and welcomes her in.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Rajesh asks Neha how she is and they both say they are well.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Rajesh and Neha agree it is a beautiful sunny morning.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Rajesh has to leave for work and Neha says she does too.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Neha and Rajesh say goodbye at the door and agree to see each other tomorrow.
