# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Mona and Sameh's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The entrance of an apartment building in Zamalek in Cairo on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Mona moved in at the weekend and runs into Sameh, who has lived here for years, on her way out. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Mona and Sameh greet each other, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Mona and Sameh exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Saying pleased to meet you

Sameh tells Mona he is pleased to meet her and welcomes her in.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Sameh asks Mona how she is and they both say they are well.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Sameh and Mona agree it is a fine sunny morning.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Sameh is leaving for work and Mona says she is too.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Mona and Sameh say goodbye at the door and agree to see each other tomorrow.
