# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Li Na and Zhang Wei's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The lobby of an apartment building in Beijing on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Li Na moved in at the weekend and runs into Zhang Wei, who has lived here for years, on her way out. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Li Na and Zhang Wei say hello in the lobby, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Li Na and Zhang Wei exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Saying pleased to meet you

Zhang Wei says he is pleased to meet Li Na, and that they are neighbours from now on.

### 4. Settling into the building

Zhang Wei asks Li Na how she is settling in, and offers to help.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Zhang Wei and Li Na agree it is a fine sunny morning.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Zhang Wei says he is off, and asks whether Li Na is heading to work too.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Li Na and Zhang Wei say goodbye at the door and agree to see each other tomorrow.
