# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Marta and Rui's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The entrance hall of an apartment building in Graça in Lisbon on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Marta moved in at the weekend and runs into Rui, who has lived here for years, on her way out. Both hold the polite form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Marta and Rui say hello in the entrance hall, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Marta and Rui exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Welcoming someone somewhere new

Rui welcomes Marta to the building and she thanks him.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Marta and Rui ask after each other and both say they are well.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Marta and Rui agree it is a beautiful sunny morning.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Rui has to leave, and Marta says she is off to work.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Marta and Rui say goodbye at the door and arrange to see each other tomorrow.
