# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Emma and Ray's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The lobby of an apartment building in Chicago on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Emma moved in at the weekend and runs into Ray, who has lived here for years, on her way out.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Emma and Ray say hello in the lobby, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Emma and Ray exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Welcoming someone somewhere new

Ray welcomes Emma to the building and she thanks him.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Emma and Ray ask after each other and both say they are well.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Emma and Ray agree it is a beautiful sunny day.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Ray and Emma both have to leave, and say it was good to meet.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Emma and Ray say goodbye at the door and arrange to see each other tomorrow.
