# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Elif and Kemal's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The stairwell of an apartment building in Kadıköy, İstanbul, on a warm weekday morning. Elif moved in at the weekend and runs into Kemal, who has lived here for years, on her way out. They hold the polite siz form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Kemal greets Elif on the stairs and works out that she is the new neighbour.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Elif and Kemal exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Welcoming someone somewhere new

Kemal welcomes Elif to the building and tells her what it is like.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Kemal asks how Elif is and she mentions the boxes.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Elif and Kemal talk about the warm morning and the coming summer.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Kemal says he is off to work and Elif wishes him well.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Kemal and Elif say goodbye and he tells her his door is open.
