# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting a neighbour by listening to Ellie and Dave's conversation about moving into the building. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The hallway of a block of flats in Bristol on a warm, sunny weekday morning. Ellie moved in at the weekend and runs into Dave, who has lived here for years, on her way out.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Ellie and Dave say hello in the hallway, and she mentions she is new.

### 2. Asking someone's name

Ellie and Dave exchange names, and he has to check he heard hers right.

### 3. Welcoming someone somewhere new

Dave welcomes Ellie to the building and she thanks him.

### 4. Asking how someone is

Dave asks Ellie how she is, twice, and she works out he is only saying hello.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Ellie and Dave agree it is a beautiful sunny day.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Dave and Ellie both have to leave, and say it was good to meet.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Ellie and Dave say goodbye at the door and arrange to see each other tomorrow.
