# First steps: Hello and who I am

> Master meeting someone new by listening to Morita and Takahashi's conversation about moving in next door. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** The entrance hall of an apartment building in Kōenji, Tokyo, on a bright weekday morning. Morita moved in last week and is on her way out when she runs into Takahashi, who has lived here for years. Both hold polite です・ます form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting a neighbour

Morita and Takahashi say good morning in the entrance hall, and she catches his attention.

### 2. Introducing yourself to a neighbour

Morita tells Takahashi she moved in last week, and they introduce themselves properly.

### 3. Asking someone's name

Takahashi asks Morita her name and gives his own, which she has to check.

### 4. Reacting to what you hear

Takahashi tells Morita the building is quiet, and she is glad to hear it.

### 5. Talking about the weather

Takahashi and Morita agree it is a fine warm morning.

### 6. Saying you have to go

Morita says she has to leave for work, and Takahashi sees her off.

### 7. Saying goodbye for the day

Morita and Takahashi arrange to see each other again tomorrow.
