# First steps in conversational Dutch

> Master everyday Dutch expressions by listening to Julia and Bram's conversation about essential greetings and polite phrases. It may feel challenging at first, but by the end of this course you will be able to fully understand and participate.

**Setting:** Julia visits Bram at his working windmill near the Zaanse Schans to pick up some traditional milling gear for a new exhibition at her polder museum. As they chat over coffee and move around the windmill site, they share everyday Dutch greetings, polite expressions, and common sayings.

## Lessons

### 1. Greeting and asking how someone is

Julia and Bram greet each other in the morning and ask how the other is doing.

### 2. Offering and accepting a drink

Bram offers Julia a cup of coffee, which she accepts and enjoys.

### 3. Asking for additions to a drink

Julia asks for milk for her coffee, and Bram offers sugar instead when he does not have milk.

### 4. Talking about weather and passing by

Bram and Julia comment on the good weather before Julia asks to politely step past him.

### 5. Warning about stairs and giving items

Bram cautions Julia about the narrow staircase and hands her a bag intended for her museum.

### 6. Asking about the weight of items

Bram mentions that the museum bag is heavy, and Julia asks him how much it weighs.

### 7. Offering help and asking for items

Bram offers to carry the heavy bag downstairs, and Julia asks if he also has an old photo.

### 8. Asking where a neighbor lives

Bram explains that his neighbor has the photo and points out where the neighbor lives.

### 9. Declining drinks and asking the time

Bram offers Julia more coffee, which she declines before asking him for the current time.

### 10. Explaining your schedule and leaving

Julia realizes she must leave soon for work, and Bram wishes her well for her shift.

### 11. Making plans for the weekend

Bram asks if Julia will visit again on Saturday and promises to make coffee for her return.

### 12. Asking where your belongings are

Julia asks where her personal bag is located, finds it by the door, and receives the heavy museum sack.

### 13. Giving warnings and sending greetings

Bram reminds Julia to be careful on the stairs and asks her to send his regards to her colleagues.

### 14. Saying goodbye and wishing well

Bram and Julia say goodbye to each other and exchange warm wishes for the rest of the day.
