# Exploring the Utrecht canals

**Language:** Dutch
**CEFR Level:** A2

> Join Sem and Lotte for a tour of the Utrecht canals, one short conversation at a time. Each lesson trains your ear until you can follow every word and answer back.

**Setting:** Sem and Lotte are spending a day off together in Utrecht, renting a pedal boat and walking along the Oudegracht. As they navigate the historic canals and stop at wharf cellars, they chat about the city's sights, canal culture, and evening lights.

## Lessons

### 1. Discussing plans for the day

Sem tells Lotte that he made a schedule for their outing, which includes two hours of boating and a walk along the canal.

### 2. Scheduling a coffee break

Lotte asks about getting coffee, and Sem assures her it is planned for four o'clock before helping her get ready to board.

### 3. Asking for help and dividing tasks

Lotte asks Sem for a hand while stepping onto the moving boat and asks who will be pedaling.

### 4. Comparing environments and weather

Sem and Lotte agree on steering roles before comparing the calm canal water to the windy beach where Lotte lives.

### 5. Navigating obstacles and steering

While passing under a dark bridge, Lotte notices an echo and Sem warns her to pedal harder to avoid hitting the wall.

### 6. Asking about city history

Sem explains to Lotte how canal cellars used to receive goods directly from large cargo boats in the past.

### 7. Talking about work routines

Lotte learns that Sem often visits the city for work, though he spends his workdays indoors without boating.

### 8. Observing people in public spaces

Lotte encourages Sem to take it easy, and they watch locals relaxing along the canal edge with their feet over the water.

### 9. Expressing desires and stepping off

Lotte suggests having a drink by the water later, and both notice their tired legs after returning the boat.

### 10. Walking down steep stairs carefully

Sem warns Lotte about the narrow, wet stairs as they head down to the terrace right on schedule at four o'clock.

### 11. Ordering food and drinks

At the canal terrace, Sem orders a coffee while Lotte decides on a beer and a sandwich.

### 12. Explaining daily habits

Lotte explains her early wake-up routine to justify eating early, while Sem mentions that the city lights up the bridges at night.

### 13. Asking about evening events

Sem describes the colorful bridge illuminations, prompting Lotte to suggest staying out until dark.

### 14. Updating plans for the evening

Lotte convinces Sem to add evening light-watching and one last terrace stop to his schedule.
