# First steps: Eating out

> Listen in as Sun Qian and Wu Bin talk through a dinner order in real, everyday Chinese. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A small neighbourhood restaurant in Shanghai on a warm evening, with a few tables out on the pavement. Sun Qian has come for dinner with a friend and Wu Bin is waiting tables. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Asking for a table

Sun Qian asks Wu Bin for a table outside for two.

### 2. Asking for the menu

Sun Qian asks Wu Bin for the menu and takes her time over it.

### 3. Ordering for two people

Sun Qian orders the pork for herself and the greens for her friend.

### 4. Ordering drinks with a meal

Wu Bin takes Sun Qian's order for a beer and some water.

### 5. Saying the food is good

Wu Bin checks on the table and offers more water.

### 6. Asking for the bill

Sun Qian asks Wu Bin for the bill and pays by phone.

### 7. Saying goodbye after a meal

Sun Qian and Wu Bin say goodbye at the end of the meal.
