# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Nishimura and Kawaguchi talk through the way to the station in real, everyday Japanese. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Tokyo, late morning. Nishimura is in the city for two days and stops Kawaguchi, who has lived on this street all his life. Both hold polite です・ます form from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Nishimura stops Kawaguchi in the street to ask the way to the station.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Nishimura asks Kawaguchi how long the walk takes.

### 3. Following directions to the station

Kawaguchi gives Nishimura the directions twice, slowly.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Nishimura works out with Kawaguchi where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Kawaguchi explains to Nishimura that the station sits behind the bank.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Nishimura asks Kawaguchi where the toilet is.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Nishimura thanks Kawaguchi for his help and they part.
