# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Bai Wei and Lao Chen talk through the way to the metro in real, everyday Chinese. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Shanghai a few streets from the park, late morning. Bai Wei is in the city for two days and stops Lao Chen, who has lived on this street all his life. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Bai Wei stops Lao Chen in the street to ask the way to the metro.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Bai Wei asks Lao Chen how long the walk takes.

### 3. Following directions to the metro

Lao Chen gives Bai Wei the directions twice, slowly.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Bai Wei works out with Lao Chen where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Bai Wei and Lao Chen work out that the metro is behind the restaurant.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Bai Wei asks Lao Chen where she can find a toilet.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Bai Wei thanks Lao Chen for his help and they part.
