# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Nina and Boris talk through the way to the metro in real, everyday Russian. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Petrogradsky in St Petersburg a few streets from the park, late morning. Nina is in the city for two days and stops Boris, who has lived on this street all his life. Both speak to each other formally throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Nina stops Boris in the street to ask the way to the metro.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Nina asks whether the metro is far, and Boris answers in minutes.

### 3. Following directions to the metro

Boris gives Nina the directions twice, slowly.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Nina works out with Boris where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Nina and Boris work out that the metro is behind the hotel.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Nina asks Boris where she can find a toilet.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Nina thanks Boris for his help and they part.
