# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Aisha and Nilton talk through the way to the metro in real, everyday Portuguese. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro a few streets from the square, late morning. Aisha is in the city for two days and stops Nilton, who has lived on this street all his life. She uses o senhor with him from the first line.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Aisha stops Nilton in the street to ask the way to the metro.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Aisha asks Nilton how long the walk takes.

### 3. Following directions to the metro

Nilton gives Aisha the directions twice, slowly.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Aisha works out with Nilton where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Aisha and Nilton work out that the metro is behind the hotel.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Aisha asks Nilton where she can find a toilet.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Aisha thanks Nilton for his help and they part.
