# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Zara and Cees talk through the way to the station in real, everyday Dutch. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Amsterdam a few streets from the park, late morning. Zara is in the city for two days and stops Cees, who has lived on this street all his life. She uses u with him, as you do with someone that age.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Zara stops Cees in the street to ask the way to the station.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Zara asks Cees whether the station is far.

### 3. Following directions to the station

Zara asks Cees to repeat, and he adds the next step.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Zara works out with Cees where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Zara and Cees work out that the station is behind the hotel.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Zara asks Cees where the toilet is.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Zara thanks Cees for his help and they part.
