# First steps: Where is it?

> Listen in as Laila and Sabry talk through the way to the station in real, everyday Egyptian Arabic. By the end of this course their conversation will feel easy to follow, and you'll be ready to join in.

**Setting:** A street corner in Alexandria a few streets from the public garden, late morning. Laila is in the city for two days and stops Sabry, who has lived on this street all his life. Both speak to each other politely throughout.

## Lessons

### 1. Stopping someone to ask directions

Laila stops Sabry in the street to ask the way to the station.

### 2. Asking how far somewhere is

Laila asks whether the station is far, and Sabry says how long it takes.

### 3. Following directions to the station

Sabry gives Laila the directions twice, slowly.

### 4. Locating a bank by landmarks

Laila works out with Sabry where the bank is.

### 5. Saying what is behind something

Laila and Sabry work out that the station is behind the hotel.

### 6. Asking where the toilet is

Laila asks Sabry where she can find a toilet.

### 7. Thanking someone for their help

Laila thanks Sabry for his help and they part.
